thanks Steve would be nice to do that but I can't since I have no longer got a garage ...would it be possible to do it by cutting floor and channel out and then sliding a new one in ???

What Steve suggested is the best and proper way to do the job to ensure the car is safe and that the car is actually fixed, Any less and you'll be plagued with problems and eventually have to redo it...

It only takes about an hour to get the all the bolts out and lift the body off. Mechanical questions applicable to any VW go in the VW forum
